Why not consider online donations to support the free version? Post a link and blog entry and see if you get a sufficient response rate/$s to fund the free version? Might be worth a try as it would be easier, faster and might sidestep the risks attached with a more stratified (dare I say, Microsoft-style) approach to Saxon.
