I've now implemented the first suggestion above: a call to a user function is now evaluated in push mode if its containing expression is evaluated in push mode (an example will be {f:call()} in XQuery, or in XSLT). First results indicate a significant improvement in this benchmark. Comparable figures are: XSLT: 9003 ms XQuery, Saxon 8.7.3: 18317 ms XQuery, Saxon 8.7.3 with -pull option: 14571 ms XQuery with this change: 11406 ms
